Draw true girih and geometric star patterns

The geometric stars and girih maker comes from the pattern library. Its 10-fold option uses the five girih tiles: decagon, pentagon, bowtie, rhombus and elongated hexagon. Every edge is the same length, and lines cross each edge's midpoint at 72 and 108 degrees.

Samples to start from

What you get

  • A seamless repeat, as SVG or PNG
  • A wall panel of repeats inside a plain border
  • A stencil whose bands hold the sheet in one piece, with holes for lining it up
  • A printable PDF with the panel, one repeat, the stencil and notes

What each option is

Only the 10-fold option is called girih. The 4, 6, 8 and 12-fold options are geometric star patterns on regular polygons. An 8, 10 or 12-fold star can't give a whole repeating pattern that symmetry, so the tool lists the star's rotation and the pattern's separately. The girih patch came from a computer search and isn't copied from any building.
